about

Sat in the Nelson Head in Horsey one afternoon, I found myself reading a story of 3 Local fishermen. They, like me, grew up in the village and drank in the pub. One evening as the floods of 1953 hit Horsey, their fishing vessel was upturned by the tide. This song tells their tragic, yet true story.

lyrics

Lost at sea

In a hamlet but 12 miles north of a town
On a night both foul & fair
3 men set their sights upon the sea
To meet their fortune there
All 3 were local fishermen
All were capable, all were brave
But nothing could prepare them now
For natures mighty wave

Horsey's an unfamiliar place
Where boulder strewn beaches lie
Protecting Norfolk's low lying land
from the torture of the tides
Across for some hundred yards or more
Of marshy wasteland lay
A wreck of what was a worthy ship
Only yesterday, and

3 more water graves, no one will be saved
From the peril's of Horsey's great waves

A brother of the captain watched
As the nameless ship returned
With a cargo full of nets and gear
And a fortune they had earned
Yet only 80 yards short of the shore
The ship began to dive
Turned turtle and came keel uppermost
Swallowed by the tide, and

3 more water graves, no one will be saved
From the peril's of Horsey's great waves

The village laid in silent wait
As the bodies of the 3
But fathers grand and husbands
Were forever lost at sea
